Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 500g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (7g) dry yeast or 25g fresh yeast
- 250ml (1 cup) lukewarm milk
- 75g (1/3 cup) sugar
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 egg
- 75g (5 tbsp) unsalted butter (softened)
For the topping:
- 100g (7 tbsp) unsalted butter (cubed)
- 100g (1/2 cup) sugar
- 50g (1/2 cup) sliced almonds
- 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
- 2 tbsp heavy cream or milk
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in lukewarm milk with a teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, along with the egg and softened butter. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes with a stand mixer).
- Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F). Grease a baking tray or line it with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough onto the baking tray, spreading it evenly.
- Use your fingers to make small indentations all over the dough, then place the butter cubes into the indentations.
- Sprinkle the sugar, sliced almonds, and cinnamon (if using) over the top. Drizzle with the heavy cream or milk.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the cake cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea, just as they do on Baltrum!
